OleoSense

Is it possible to reduce the water use keeping or even improving oil quality? A UTW R&D project funded by CDTI and ESA seeks to answer this question.

OleoSense is a project that falls within the so-called “precision agriculture“, which aims to determine the differences that exist in an agricultural plot in order to apply differentiated and optimised irrigation/fertilisation/phytosanitary policies in each area of the plot. OleoSense was created on this basis, initially aimed at the olive sector, a crop that is becoming increasingly important given its position in Spain and its current intensification.

Resumen OleoSense

OleoSense offers a comprehensive system for capturing information and support for decision making in quality management and crop management optimisation. It encompasses different technologies, taking advantage of the synergies that exist between them (drones, satellite images, IoT, climatological information and historical data from previous seasons). Thanks to this technological solution, it will be possible to predict the behaviour of the olive tree, its water needs, irrigating when necessary and with the amount that the olive tree needs; and its nutritional needs, applying nitrogen in an optimal and dosed manner.

In addition, it will be possible to estimate the optimum ripening point, based on the farmer’s requirements, thus seeking to improve the quality of the final product, the oil.
